School of Nursing Undergraduate and Graduate Programs
Thomas Edison State University (TESU) welcomes out-of-state prospective student applications. TESU will review applications on a case-by-case basis to assure that there are no federal, state, or regional restrictions for accepting the applicant into the nursing (BSN, MSN/MSN Nurse Practitioner Program/DNP) or healthcare programs. TESU participates in some select State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) allowing us to offer distance education programs to students in other SARA member states.
Out-of-state students are expected to identify appropriate clinical sites and preceptors, which will be verified by TESU Nursing Staff. In addition, the nursing advisors and administrators of programs will work collaboratively with all students to attain appropriate clinical sites and qualified preceptors.
Please note: TESU is unable to admit students from states in which the TESU nursing or healthcare programs do not meet state regulations for licensure/certification.
Please also review the following disclosure regarding Graduate nursing programs:
Graduate nursing programs at TESU are designed to prepare graduates with an active, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license to qualify to sit for national nurse practitioner certification exams, which are required for practice as a nurse practitioner. Because no graduate program can guarantee that graduates will be permitted to practice as an advanced practice nurse upon graduation, TESU encourages students to consult the appropriate Board of Nursing or state agency to determine specific certification requirements (e.g., number of clinical hours). It is the student’s responsibility to understand, evaluate, and comply with all requirements relating to national certification.
TESU makes no representations or guarantees that completion of its coursework or programs will permit an individual to obtain national certification. For more information about nurse practitioner certification exams, students should visit the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the National Certification Corporation at nccwebsite.org, the National Board of Certification for Nurse Anesthetist at www.nbcrna.com or other advanced practice nursing certification exam websites.
As of January 1, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education requires all nursing programs to post on their website:
- A list of all states/jurisdictions where the institution’s curriculum meets state educational requirements for professional licensure or certification.
- A list of all states/jurisdictions where the institution’s curriculum does not meet state educational requirements for professional licensure or certification.
- A list of all states/jurisdictions where the institution has not made a determination of whether or not the curriculum meets educational requirements.
For state-specific nursing licensure/certification regulations please visit the National Council of State Boards of Nursing website (Board of Nursing Licensure Requirements | NCSBN) which is updated periodically, but the most current information can always be obtained from each state’s website.
